The holistic approach to detox

The liver is the ultimate multitasking organ that works constantly to remove and purge toxins from the bod. It filters over a liter of blood each and every minute to remove toxins from circulation, allowing a better transportation of oxygen and nutrients to the cells. It produces one liter of an important digestive liquid called the bile which is stored in the gallbladder and is released to facilitate digestion and absorption of fat into the bloodstream. It stores energy. It breaks down most carbs into a type of sugar called glucose, which is the main source of fuel for our cells. Glucose stored in the liver is called glycogen. Like any filter, the liver requires maintenance to work properly. When it is overloaded, the toxins circulate in the blood and the body becomes self-intoxicated leading to fatigue, headaches, dizziness, digestive disturbances, PMS, menstrual irregularities, joints pain, weak nails, dull skin and other unbalances. With that said, your liver is your best partner and you might be wondering what you can do to love it back.

To limit toxins entering the body through the mouth, we should drink pure water and avoid excessive soda, alcohol (contains concentrated sugar which change to fat and get stuck in the liver, decreasing its detox function) and caffeine. We should eat high quality organic natural whole foods, free range eggs, organic grass-fed meats, wild animal foods and enjoy home cooking. We should use Teflon-free cookware and BPA-free eating containers to avoid food toxin contamination. We should avoid pain killers and drugs.

To limit toxins entering the body through the nose, say no to smoking. The liver will work harder to break down and remove nicotine. Use environmentally-friendly products when gardening and home cleaning. Use formaldehyde-free home products and furniture. If possible favor living and working in less polluted communities.

To limit toxins entering the body through the skin, use natural and non-toxic sunscreens and body care.

Love your liver and eat foods low in sugar, high in fiber, antioxidants and Omega-3.

  • Beets
  • Avocado
  • Broccoli and Brussels sprouts
  • Citrus fruits (grapefruits, lemons, oranges)
  • Increase leafy greens, hi-fiber and antioxidants foods. Fibers accelerate the elimination of toxins and can even reverse liver damage.
  • Fresh herbs, turmeric, coriander, parsley, cilantro, oregano and garlic.
  • Raw honey (not heated and not refined)
  • Coconut oil
  • Apple cider vinegar
  • Walnuts
  • Say no to refined sugar and refined grains.

Love your liver and practice yogasanas, pranayama & meditation.

Stress can cause emotional disorders, frustration and anger that affect the endocrine, reproductive and digestive systems and the liver function. The restless lifestyle acts like toxins for the mind. When both the body and the mind are purified from toxins, they protect the immune system from diseases and take care of the liver. Yoga offers specific body postures to stimulate and accelerate the detox process. Pranayama or the yogi controlled way of breathing helps cleanse the channels increasing the oxygen into the body which is vital for the proper function of the organs and the brain. Controlled breathing helps with proper elimination of carbon dioxide, which is a waste toxin. When the mind is purified, it becomes clear and focused and ready for meditation. Detox works best in a holistic approach: healthy diet, physical exercise and meditation.

Namaste
